How it works
ChordTile reads a Guitar Pro file and shows you the song as a map: sections, bars and the chord of each bar in a colour. Then you practise it part by part, with the tab and the sound following along.
Get started in three steps
- Load the song. Press “Load file” or drag the file onto the page. Guitar Pro 3 to 8 (
.gp3,.gp4,.gp5,.gpx,.gp) and MusicXML are supported. - Pick your instrument in the menu in the top bar (it is the only place to change it). The chord of each bar is detected from it. If the song has a bass, it starts with that.
- Practise. Press ▶, pick a section and press “Practise” to loop it, or open a bar to study it in detail.
The chart
Each square is a bar. The letter is the main note (the chord) of that bar on your instrument, and the colour tells you which note it is without reading:
- Sections. Bars are grouped by the sections marked in the file (Intro, Verse, Chorus…). Click a section name to rename it.
- Go to a bar. Click (or tap) a square: the player and the tab jump to that bar.
- Practise a section. The “Practise” button next to the name loops the section (Premium). Press it again to stop.
- Add your own note. Double-click a square (or tap it and choose “Add note”) and type a short reminder, for example
palm mute,x2orslide. It appears under the chord, is saved with the song and goes into the PDF. Leave it empty to remove it. - New section. Pick a bar and press “New section here” to start a section at that point.
- Export PDF (Premium). Creates an A4 sheet with the colour chart, to print or take to rehearsal. It looks just like the chart on screen, in the theme you are using: switch to the light theme first if you want to save ink.
In Settings you can turn the colours off, show minor chords (Am, Em…), show two chords when the chord changes mid-bar, choose whether to use the chords written in the file, use Do Re Mi instead of letters, choose sharps or flats, and show 2, 4 or 8 squares per row. In the “Tab” group you choose how many bars the tab shows on each line. “Reset detected chart” puts the sections back as they are in the file.
Tile by Tile: learn the song by heart
A guided method to stop depending on the tab. Press Start Tile by Tile in the highlighted card at the top of the player (or the Tile by Tile button above the chart). Your step is saved for each song, so you can stop and continue later.
- Learn a section from the tab. Only that section’s tab is shown, playing on loop. Use the speed menu if it’s too fast.
- Play it from the tiles. The tab disappears and only that section’s tiles stay. Tap a tile to write a note under the chord (like “slide” or “x2”).
- Repeat for every section of the song.
- Play the whole song from the tiles only.
Use “Back” whenever you need the tab again. Your step is saved for each song in your account, so you can stop and continue later, on any device. Tile by Tile is a Premium feature (included in the 7-day trial).
The tab
The tab of your instrument follows the chart and the sound: the cursor shows what is playing, and the bar being played lights up in the chart.
- Click a bar in the tab to select it. A bar with Expand and Loop appears.
- Loop repeats just that bar.
- Expand (Premium; or double-click) opens the bar large. See the next section.
Practising a bar
In the bar window (Premium) you see the strings and frets large and, underneath, how to count: “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &”, lined up with the notes. While it plays, the right note and count light up, and a dot above blinks on each beat.
- The count is automatic: for each bar it uses the simplest count that hits every note, following the song: beats (1 2 3 4), eighth notes (1 & 2 &) or sixteenth notes (1 e & a). In 3/4 you count “1 & 2 & 3 &”; in 6/8, “1 2 3 4 5 6”.
- Play on loop with the same tools as the player: 1-bar count-in, metronome and its sound, Play along, Solo and speed (25%, 50%, 75%, 100% or 125%). They are the same switches as in the player, so what you choose in one shows in the other. The counter shows how many repeats you have done.
- Techniques and dynamics: each note shows how to play it, as written in the file: H hammer-on, P pull-off, / \ slides, ↑ full or ↑ ½ bends, ~ vibrato, PM palm mute, LR let ring, harmonics (NH, AH, PH), x dead notes and (5) ghost notes. Slap, pop, strums and dynamics (p, mf, f…) appear above the strings. Under the bar, “In this bar” explains every mark it uses.
- The arrows move to the previous or next bar without losing the loop. Esc closes.
The player
- ▶ / ❚❚ plays and pauses; ‹ › move bar by bar; the progress bar takes you anywhere in the song.
- Speed: a menu with 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 125%. Slows the song down (or speeds it up a little) without changing the pitch.
- Loop (Premium), Metronome and Count-in (one bar of counting before it starts).
- Metronome sound: in Settings (or in an expanded bar) choose a classic click, a voice (female or male) that counts “one, two, three, four”, woodblock, beep, cowbell or hi-hat. The count-in uses the same sound. The metronome and the count-in are mixed into the song’s own audio, so they stay exactly in time with the music at any speed, in loops and after a pause.
- Play along (Premium): mutes your instrument and keeps the rest of the band, so you play that part.
- Solo (Premium, only my instrument): mutes the rest of the band and keeps only your instrument, so you can hear exactly what to play. The two options are never on at the same time.
- Progress (Premium): next to each section you see how long you have practised it and your best speed. A section is “Mastered” once you have played it on loop 3 times at 100% speed or faster.

My songs
Every song you load is saved in “My songs”, in your account, with your notes, the instrument you picked, the sections, your progress and your Tile by Tile step. Sign in on any device and they are there; the last song you used opens. Nothing is kept in the browser.
- Without an account you can only try the sample song (and nothing you change is kept).
- Free account: up to 3 songs in your account.
- Premium: as many songs as you like.

- The player options (speed, loop, metronome…) are behind the options button (sliders icon) next to ▶.
- On a small screen, the theme, the tour, this guide and Premium are in Settings.
- Add to Home Screen to open it like an app: on iPhone, Share → “Add to Home Screen”; on Android, menu ⋮ → “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.
Frequently asked questions
My file won’t open
Check that it is a Guitar Pro (3 to 8) or MusicXML file. If it opens in Guitar Pro but not here, save it as .gp5 there and try again.
The chord of a bar is wrong
The chord is worked out from the notes of the chosen instrument, and some bars are ambiguous (passing notes, inverted chords). Check you picked the right instrument, and try the options in Settings → Chart: “Show minor chords”, “Two chords per bar” and “Use chords written in the file”. You can also write the right chord as a note on the bar.
The tab runs ahead of the sound
This happens mostly with Bluetooth headphones. In Settings → Audio & timing, increase “Delay cursor and chart” (usually between 150 and 300 ms) until the tab and the squares match what you hear.
I can’t hear anything on my phone
Turn up the media volume and press ▶ again. On iPhone, the site plays even in silent mode; if you still hear nothing, turn silent mode off and reload the page.
Why are the drums not in the instrument list?
Drums have no pitched notes, so there is no chord to show. You still hear them in the backing sound.
Are my files sent anywhere?
Your songs are opened in your browser and stored, privately, in your account (with Supabase, our hosting provider), so they are on every device you sign in to. They are never shared with anyone. See the terms and privacy.
How do I cancel Premium?
Open your account and choose “Manage subscription”. Premium stays on until the end of the period you paid for. After that, the free plan applies: all your songs stay in your account and you can keep opening them, but you can only add new ones while you have fewer than 3.
How much does Premium cost?
Premium costs €3.99 a month, €29 a year or €49 once (lifetime), VAT included. Creating an account starts a free 7-day Premium trial with no card needed.
